Alsatua, pronounced "us-la-twa", shaker, also known as Patica, asalato, kashaka, cascas, televi, comes from the region of Ghana in Africa.

They come in pair and their sound is awesome. Each pod is a gourd from the Swawa tree which is collected once it dry and fall off the tree. Gourds are then hollowed and filled with orange pebbles.

Alsatua are played by holding and shaking one ground in the palm while swinging the second gourd around, creating both sandy shaking sounds and percussive clicks when the two connect.

They are typically played in pairs (one in each hand) and, depending on the player skills, it is possible to produce complex polyrhythms, when they are played with different rhythms and different time signatures in each hand.
