This is a quote from the British Medical Journal:
“In conclusion, didgeridoo playing improved daytime sleepiness in patients with moderate snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea and reduced sleep disturbance in their partners. This Reuters news article is a summary of this amazing life changing discovery

Regular didgeridoo playing reduces snoring and daytime sleepiness, finds a study published by the British Medical Journal. Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome are common sleep disorders caused by the collapse of the upper airways.

Reports of didgeridoo players experiencing reduced daytime sleepiness and snoring after practicing, led experts in Switzerland to test the theory that training of the upper airways by didgeridoo playing can improve these disorders. They identified 25 patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and who complained about snoring. Patients were randomly allocated to an intervention group (didgeridoo lessons and daily practice at home for four months) or a control group (remained on a waiting list for lessons). Compared with the control group, daytime sleepiness and apnoea scores improved significantly in the didgeridoo group. Partners of patients in the didgeridoo group also reported much less sleep disturbance.

“The authors conclude that regular training of the upper airways by didgeridoo playing reduces daytime sleepiness and snoring in people with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and also improves the sleep quality of partners.”

“On average, participants in the didgeridoo group practised on 5.9 days a week (SD 0.86, range 4.6-6.9) for 25.3 minutes (3.4). There were no adverse or unexpected events in either group. Table 2 shows the effects of didgeridoo playing on the four sleep related outcomes. The primary outcome (daytime sleepiness as measured by the Epworth scale) improved significantly in the didgeridoo group compared with the control group” BMJ  2006;332:266-270 (4 February), doi:10.1136/bmj.38705.470590.55 (published 23 December 2005)

What is a Didgeridoo?

The didgeridoo (also known as a didjeridu or didge and many other names e.g.yidaki,ngarrriralkpwina,garnbak,paampu) is a wind instrument of the Aborigines of Northern Australia only. It has been described as a natural wooden trumpet or "drone pipe" as well as being classified as an aerophone by musicologists.

Traditionally the Didgeridoo was made from living Eucalyptus trees, which have had their interiors hollowed out by termites. It is a myth that whole logs were stuck into termite mounds to make Didgeridoos. Didgeridoo makers’  would find suitable trees by tapping on the outside of a live tree to see if it was hollow.

Today the Didgeridoo is made from a variety of materials including termite hollowed Eucalyptus xxxx trees. Great Didgeridoos are also made from plastic, two piece plastic Slide Didgeridoos, Hemp, Hand Painted Aboriginal Art Eucalyptus Didgeridoo’s, Concert quality instruments,

Can I learn to play the Didgeridoo?

To be honest it's as simple as this, if you can fog up a mirror when you breathe on it, you can learn to play the didgeridoo.

There are no age, sex, height, weight, color, language, ability, musical experience, taste or style restrictions to qualify to play the didgeridoo. Grab yourself a good beginner didgeridoo or an incredible didgeridoo, you wont be disappointed. Get hold of the Playing The Didgeridoo instructional CD series or DVD and your into it.

What if I am not very musical?
Because the didgeridoo doesn’t have multiple strings and keys like most other musical instruments, playing it can be as uncomplicated as you like. Once you can play the drone, about 2 to 20 minutes to learn, the worst sound you can make is the awesome drone sound everybody loves! How’s that, in such a short time, with no musical experience you can be playing sweet tunes! Of course if you have an instrumental or musical background, once you start playing you can use your rhythm, grooves and experience, to help you create new songs and symphony.

Will it drive my family and Neighbors MAD?
The volume of your didgeridoo is greatly affected by how you play. Changing the volume while you play is easy, the less air you use and the more you relax the quieter the playing volume. You can really deaden the sound by playing on carpet, a towel, cushions or any combination of softness! Maybe set your teddy bears up in front of your Didgeridoo for a small concert, they will absorb heaps of sound! Of course the opposite is also true, if you wish to share your groove with your neighbors, just play in the bathroom, on a hard floor, a hard corner, a cupboard, even a tub or bucket, then look out, coz this will pump up the volume!

How hard is it to play, do I need BIG lung power?
Many people every day visit us and tell us they don’t have enough lung power to play, for one reason or another! Truth is, the hardest thing about learning how to play the Didgeridoo is relaxing.

The drone on the Didgeridoo is made from a gentle vibration of the lips. Basically the best sounds come from relaxed playing using a small controlled release of air through those vibrating lips! Interestingly, Guys often take a couple of minutes longer than girls to relax enough to get their drone playing smoothly, I think its just a guy thing! Fact is, every willing person has been able to achieve the drone within a few minutes of his or her first attempt. The rest of the cool didgeridoo sounds come from your voice, tongue, cheeks and diaphragm not your lungs!

The fact is, once you can make the drone on a didgeridoo it doesn't really matter what size it is, the same technique, pretty much, makes them all work! We have a number of children us young as 2 ½ years old, coming into the store making the biggest didgeridoos absolutely rip.

Lung power is not an issue or an excuse!

How long do I have to play for, to make a difference?
It usually takes 15 or 20 minutes of playing for us to fully warm up and relax then settle into playing. It takes about this amount of time for the Didgeridoo to warm up as well.

The British Medical Journal reported that significant improvement was made by practicing for 25 minutes a day, 6 days a week over a 4 month period. That’s pretty quick for a significant improvement isn’t it?
